Glucophage® XR 500 mg contains metformin hydrochloride extended-release, an oral antihyperglycemic medicine used in the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Metformin improves glucose tolerance by lowering both fasting and post-meal blood glucose levels. It works by reducing glucose production in the liver, decreasing intestinal glucose absorption, and improving insulin sensitivity, thereby increasing peripheral glucose uptake and use. Unlike sulfonylureas, metformin does not usually cause hypoglycaemia. Glucophage XR tablets contain inactive ingredients including hypromellose, microcrystalline cellulose, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, and magnesium stearate.
